Holding the Democrats accountable

"For too long, we have conceded huge pieces of this country to the Republicans. No more. When we roll up our sleeves and fight we can compete everywhere -- and we will," Howard Dean said about the House race in Ohio where the Democrat candidate lost with 48 percent of the vote.

Democratic Party pollster Stan Greenberg said, "one of the biggest doubts about Democrats is that they don't stand for anything."

"Hanoi Jane' Fonda seems to have tired of her moniker. The wilted flower child who firmly established her place in American history when she mounted a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun has decided it's time to teach a whole new generation to blame America first. If she actually goes through with her plans for a new protest movement, she may well become known as 'Jihadist Jane.' It has a better ring. More alliteration," Oliver North said.

MoveOn.org fighting for control

MoveOn.org has sent out an appeal for funds to keep their grassroots organizers in 15 key congressional districts. Their goal is to enable the Democrats to take control of the House of Representatives.

During the Leave No Voter Behind campaign to defeat President Bush last fall, we saw first-hand how valuable it is to have skilled organizers to provide training, inspiration, and support to MoveOn members: with the help of 500 organizers, members made 2,291,902 voter contacts and turned out more than half a million new & infrequent voters who supported Kerry. The campaign turned out more voters than Kerry's margin of victory in New Hampshire and Wisconsin, and nearly as many as Kerry's margin in Pennsylvania—a real, concrete impact.

That kind of get-out-the-vote will be doubly effective in a lower-turnout election in 2006, so we're optimistic about our chances of defeating these members of Congress. MoveOn members were grateful for the help too—Steve in Lansing, MI, wrote, "I appreciated the ability of the organizers to bring the community together and amplify our enthusiasm." Susan in Lakewood, CO, added, "The organizers were well trained, focused on the goal, enthusiastic and inspiring."

Alissa M. is one of the new organizers. A volunteer on Paul Wellstone's campaign, she's now hitting the ground in Rep. John Kline's Minnesota district. She says, "For a long time, MoveOn.org has given me a way to feel part of a larger progressive movement across the country. I look forward to being part of the face-to-face presence of MoveOn and to help my fellow Minnesotans take back our country." You can read more about the organizers beginning work in those districts here.

In addition to Rep. Kline, other targets in this first wave include Reps. Fitzpatrick (PA), Gerlach (PA), Musgrave (CO), Reichert (WA), and Simmons (CT)—all Republicans in swing districts who have voted closely with the extremists who are the party's leaders in Congress. It's hard to defeat a sitting member of Congress, but one of the best ways is with early money, and your contribution today will help us get started in plenty of time to win.
