Camp Utopia
Commentary by: Roger Wm. Hughes
Cindy Sheehan made a posting on Michael Moore’s
website in which she complains about the right wing conspiracy:
The right wingers are really having a field day with me. It hurts me
really badly, but I am willing to put up with the crap, if it ends the
war a minute sooner than it would have. I would like to address some
specific concerns that have been raised against me.
It is understandable that there will always be those who believe that
violence is not necessary. Hopefully, we will never leave them in
charge of anything other than worrying about how many peace songs do
we know.
Some have argued that Iraq may not be the right place to fight the war
on terrorism. Others have argued that we are not fighting the war
adequately in Iraq. The fact is that we have to fight it somewhere,
and Afghanistan and Iraq are as good as any place.
In World War II, Churchill and others argued for a much earlier
invasion of France. Franklin Roosevelt chose Africa. Then after
Africa, he chose Italy. Of course, the reason America was in the war
was because of Japan.
The fact is that there are some evils in this world that can only be
conquered by killing them, and you have to fight them somewhere. The
notion of giving peace a chance is a noble notion except for when you
are confronted by true evil. The extremist belief that all of humanity
must return to the perverted ideal of a 12th Century
religious order that offers no compassion is such an evil. It has the
same root evil as Communism and Aryan purity. It is the evil of total
conformity to an ideal that is false.
It is always difficult for a democracy to fight a war. It is the
reason that Henry Kissenger saw America as Athens and Russia as Sparta
and felt that America was in the inferior position. A democracy can
not win a war abroad unless it can first win it at home. This is what
the Peaceniks know, and why their actions are so dangerous.
Sheehan in her Michael Moore blog mocks the protesters against her
complaining about some bad singer who tries to make the point I am
attempting here. She of course inverts it to be that Bush is the
problem. However, there are others who are beginning to understand the
dangers of "Camp Utopia."
Move America Forward, a conservative advocacy group, said it will lead
a caravan of military family members who oppose Sheehan's
"anti-military antics."
The caravan will depart early next week from different locations
around the country, converging on Crawford in time for an Aug. 27
rally in support of U.S. troops and their mission in Iraq.
"The overwhelming majority of military families support their loved
ones and the missions they are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan," said
Move America Forward Co-Chair Melanie Morgan, who also hosts a radio
program on KSFO.
"These military families do not share Cindy Sheehan's view of the war
on terrorism, and the true story needs to be told," Morgan added. "We
invite Americans to join us en masse in Crawford, Texas, on August 27
so we can send a message to terrorists around the world that American
resolve is stronger than ever."
Let us hope that this nation has the will to fight yet another evil.
Let us hope that the closing words of Sheehan’s blog are not true:
We are moving to a place that doesn’t have much shade and I put out an
appeal for tarps and a soldier from Ft. Hood brought some to us that
he "borrowed" from Ft. Hood for us to use. I have had a lot of
soldiers from Ft. Hood come out and tell me to keep it up and that I
am doing a good thing. We are doing this to honor Casey and the other
fallen heroes in their memories. But we are doing it FOR the people of
Iraq and the other soldiers who are in harm’s way right now. Right
after we heard about the crosses last night, a Camp Casey volunteer
found out that a pen pal she had in Iraq was KIA on August 12th. This
has to stop, now. We will stop it.
