QUOTABLES

"This is to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, effective upon the nomination and confirmation of my successor," Sandra Day O'Connor, 75, said in a letter to President Bush.

"The nation deserves and I will select a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of. The nation also deserves a dignified process of confirmation in the United States Senate, characterized by fair treatment, a fair hearing and a fair vote," President Bush said.

SCOTUS: The Battle begins

Commentary by: Roger Wm. Hughes

The Likelihood of President Bush appointing two Supreme Court Justices and changing the complexion of the court reached a near 100 percent with the resignation of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

The So-Called Moderates of 14 Republicans and Democrats that arranged for the delay of the nuclear option will be greatly tested with the selection and nomination of the next Supreme Court nominee. They will be tested from both the Right and the Left. Neither side wants to chance the outcome of the next nominee that will swing the balance of the nation’s highest court.

From documents obtained from the Senate Democrat Judiciary members’ computer, we have already learned that Sen. Ted Kennedy and liberal organizations conspired to delay appellate court nominations in order to have a liberal ruling on the Michigan Law School’s preferences for Blacks. Such action will pale in comparison to what will transpire with the forthcoming battle. Justice Thomas’s media lynching will look like a Sunday School class.

Ten Commandments

The recent ruling on the Ten Commandments will only serve to fuel the Religious Right to make sure that the next appointment is "right on the issues." Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is one nomination that will not pass the 100 percent Puritan test.

The President is unlikely to be successful if he tries to nominate in the middle. If the Right is against the President’s nominee and the Left is against his nominee the President can expect about 14 votes to cut off debate.

Hagle befuddled

Sen. Chuck Hagle is confused about how his constant criticism of the Bush administration’s conduct of the War in Iraq could be used as a rallying cry against his fellow Republican legislators.

MoveOn.org sent out a fundraising letter to supporters asking for $500,000 to 'expand advertising featuring Hagle’s criticism into the towns of Republican members of Congress who will have tough elections in 2006. MoveOn expressed that the ads will help send a signal that Congress will pay a price at the ballot box because of the Iraq failures. The letter explains that 84 percent of MoveOn's 3.3 million registered members support a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.

"The ad is titled 'Hagel' and reads in part: "It's time to come home. We went in the wrong way, let's come home the right way."

Hagel claims MoveOn used his words out of context and asked for the ad to be taken down immediately."

Expect Hagel to raise money and cut ads to oppose the MoveOn.org’s ads against his Republican colleagues.

Impeach Bush

The Impeach Bush organization sent out an e-mail to their ‘troops.’ The following is the beginning of the e-mail:

More than "two-in-five voters (42%) say they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found the President misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq," according to the latest Zogby Poll.

The poll was taken between June 27 and June 29 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3%. Following Bush’s nationally-televised speech this week his approval rating dropped again to 43%.

A large majority of Democrats (59%) say that Bush should be impeached if he lied about Iraq and one out of every four Republicans (25%) say that they would favor impeachment under those circumstances, according to the Poll. Forty three percent of independent voters favor impeachment if Bush lied about the Iraq war.

We know that Bush lied about Iraq war. We know that he should be impeached. It is because of the work of everyone, and the support of those who are promoting impeachment, that this movement can become an irresistible force in the months ahead. The ImpeachBush/VoteToImpeach.org campaign is taking the next steps in the coming months. We are launching a nationwide campaign so that every Congressional representative is flooded with calls for impeachment.

Let’s all pledge to tell everyone we know to be in Washington DC on September 24 for the massive ImpeachBush/VoteToImpeach.org contingent. The bright yellow and black banners that say Impeach Bush will dominate the visual landscape around the White House on September 24. This is something historic. Please ask everyone to do their part to make it a big success.
