“The Kerry campaign: Trying to take maximum
political advantage of the prison abuse scandal
without appearing to try to take maximum political
advantage of the prison abuse scandal.”
– from ABC’s The Note.
“Were he [Rumsfeld] to resign, would discerning
people say that nothing in his public life became
him like the leaving of it?"
– writes George Will.
Nader sues Texas
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader
sued Texas after failing to collect the required
64,076 signatures in time to meet a 5 p.m. CDT
deadline on Monday.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Austin,
charges that Texas' ballot access law is
unconstitutional because it sets stricter
standards for independent candidates than it does
for third-party challengers.
Poll watching 5/11/2004
The CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll found Bush's
approval rating had dipped to 46 percent, down
from 52 percent a month earlier. Bush led
presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry 48
percent to 47 percent -- a reversal of a poll
taken last week when Kerry had a one-point edge --
in a statistically insignificant shift.
In another new low, only 44 percent said they
believed the war was worthwhile. A poll taken a
month ago showed 50 percent thought it was worth
going to war in Iraq. One year ago, 73 percent
said the war was worthwhile.
Fifty-four percent said they approved of Bush’s
performance against terrorism. The respondents
also said they had more confidence in Bush to
handle the situation in Iraq than they did in
Kerry, by 48 to 45 percent.
Kerry's rating on that issue rose from 39 percent
in a poll conducted in March while Bush's fell
from 54 percent.
Kerry petition vs The Federalists petition
Some 275,000 people have signed a petition
launched by Democratic presidential candidate John
Kerry calling for US Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld to resign over the Iraqi prisoner abuse
scandal, his campaign director said.
"More than 275,000 supporters signed our
petition," said Mary Beth Cahill in a statement.
"Americans want accountability and responsibility
at the highest levels of our government."
In contrast, The Federalist has a petition that
calls for supporting Rumsfeld. To sign this

Teresa off limits???
According to a Reuter’s article, John Kerry says
his wife Teresa is off limits and his opponents
should not attack her. "They're going to have to
go through me," says Kerry.
The article goes on to say: “Mrs. Kerry has been
criticized for her outspokenness and candor...”
Indeed. A Newsweek article about Teresa Heinz
Kerry -- titled, She’s No Hillary -- points
out: “she drops expletives in interviews and
shoots daggers at her political opponents.”
And as one comment on
FreeRepublic notes, “When she [Teresa Heinz
Kerry] attacks the president and vice president
regularly and questions their intelligence and
patriotism she is no longer a "civilian" and
should not expect to be treated as such.”
‘Nuff said.
