QUOTABLES:
“This is not an enemy [terrorists] that can be negotiated with or
reasoned with or appeased," Dick
Cheney said. "This is, to put it simply, an enemy that must be
destroyed, and with George Bush as our commander in chief, that is
exactly what we're going to do." (9/04/2004)
"I pick up the New York Times this morning and read that it was
'bizarre,' " Sen. Zell Miller said
regarding his convention speech. "The media is way out of touch
on this; they're out on the extreme left with John Kerry."
(9/04/2004)
“Senator Miller's wild-eyed, vicious attack on Senator Kerry's
patriotism has already backfired and has turned off scores of women,
moderate and independent voters of all walks of life,"
said Anne Lewis, deputy director of
the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
(9/04/2004)
"In Georgia and the rest of the South, there's a very, very large
number of Democrats who are voting for President Bush,"
Sen. Zell Miller said. "They
believe he's right on the family values issues and on taking the war
to the terrorists." (9/04/2004)
"Rather than preach Christ's gospel of love and tolerance, this group
[Christian Right] broadcasts its hatred for homosexuals and liberals
and minorities and feminists," she added. "The movement calls itself
Christian, but its appeal is to dark corners of the human soul — fear,
loathing, the desire for uniformity, the need for conformity."
Comments made in a speech in 1994 by
Teresa Heinz Kerry.
(9/04/2004)
"We have established the credentials [Commander in Chief] we need to,"
Kerry communications spokesman Joe
Lockhart said in a conference call with reporters Friday morning,
"and the campaign will turn now in a different direction and go to the
economy."
(9/04/2004)
Larry
Sabato, political science professor at the University of Virginia,
said the GOP convention
"appeared better thought out and executed than the Boston conclave for
the Democrats. Even the physical set was far more imposing, especially
the final-night presidential platform and the Fred Thompson-narrated
introductory video."

Fantasy or reality?
MoveOn.org is offering hope to the Democrat Bush bashers that make up
their ranks. Here is their latest message to the troops:
Dear MoveOn member,
Republicans hoped that their convention would strike a ringing tone
that would echo through the media for the next week. But between the
speakers' nastiness and belligerence, John Kerry's swift and tough
response, and our hard work, the momentum they're banking on is
nowhere to be seen.
At a midnight rally last night, John Kerry stood up to Bush's attacks.
"For the past week, they attacked my patriotism and even my fitness to
serve as commander in chief," he said. "Here is my answer to them: I
will not have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those
who refused to serve when they could have and who misled America into
Iraq."
Now that the convention bubble has burst, we have an opportunity today
to focus the media on the soap scum that remains. Commentators have
been surprised at how ruthlessly negative and bitter the convention
was - from the Purple Heart band-aids that Karl Rove's mentor handed
out on the stadium floor to Zell Miller's rabid attack on John Kerry.
Whether or not that perception solidifies into conventional wisdom
depends on the conversation in the nation's editorial pages, where our
letters to the editor can make a big difference. We've loaded up our
letter to the editor tool with all the information and talking points
you need to write a letter -- all it takes is a few minutes of your
time.
Can you write a letter to the editor today? Go to:

And starting today, the Bush campaign will have to face the blowback
from their cynical distortion of Kerry's record of service to our
country -- both in Vietnam and in the Senate. People who have stayed
quiet for decades about Bush's own record of service have been
outraged by the smears against Kerry and are now stepping forward.
Yesterday, a Salon expose featuring a Bush family confidante broke the
news that Bush was moved to Alabama because his father considered him
a "political liability" and needed someone to "keep an eye on him."
And next week, Salon also reports that "60 Minutes" will feature
former Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes, who's coming forward to
describe how he pulled strings to get George Bush into the Air
National Guard. In light of the Bush camp's repeated attacks on
Kerry's military service, this could open a lot of uncomfortable
questions about Bush's disappearance from duty in 1972.
We're also using this opportunity to launch the second ad in our 10
Weeks: Don't Get Mad, Get Even campaign. This great new web ad,
directed by award-winning filmmaker Richard Linklater (Slacker, School
of Rock), features a real Texan who offers a succinct rebuttal to the
Bush's agenda.

After one of the ugliest and most hate-filled conventions in recent
history, John Kerry didn't waste a moment in answering President
Bush's speech last night. He was on the air minutes after the
President finished, delivering one of his boldest speeches to date to
a midnight crowd in Springfield, OH.
"Let me tell you what I think makes someone unfit for duty," he said.
"Misleading our nation into war in Iraq makes you unfit to lead this
nation. Doing nothing while this nation loses millions of jobs makes
you unfit to lead this nation. Letting 45 million Americans go without
health care makes you unfit to lead this nation. Letting the Saudi
royal family control our energy costs makes you unfit to lead this
nation. Handing out billions of government contracts to Halliburton
while you're still on their payroll makes you unfit. That's the record
of George Bush and Dick Cheney. And it's not going to change. I
believe it's time to move America in a new direction; I believe it's
time to set a new course for America."
It's clear that Kerry isn't going to yield an inch -- Republicans
won't get a free pass for their distorted and divisive attacks on
Kerry's record. And over the last week, MoveOn members have shown that
we won't yield an inch, either. While the Republicans chanted in
Madison Square Garden, we've had our best week ever, raising an
incredible $2,600,000 to put more organizers on the ground, "Real
People" ads on the air, and four wonderful new leaders in the Senate.
We're stunned and inspired by your commitment.
The Republican convention didn't pan out the way George Bush and Karl
Rove had hoped. Together, we can make sure that the nation sees how
divisive and nasty the Republicans really are.
Write a letter to the editor of your local paper using our tool at:
http://www.moveonpac.org/lte/lte.html?zip=50595<e_campaign_id=10
And thanks again for all of your work to win back this country. The
next 9 weeks may be tough, but together, we shall prevail.
Sincerely,
--Adam, Eli, Hannah, James, Laura, and the whole MoveOn PAC Team

Medicare insurance increase
Starting in January, the elderly will pay $78.20 per month for
non-hospital services, up $11.60 from $66.60, the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services. Mark McClellan, head of the federal health
insurance program for the elderly and disabled, explained the increase
will cover the program's new prescription drug coverage and preventive
services, including an initial physical exam and other tests.
Approximately, 25 percent will be used to help build up Medicare's
trust fund.
"Medicare beneficiaries are saving money. They're paying a little more
in premiums, but they're getting more savings in their out-of-pocket
costs as a result," McClellan said.
Erroneous Poll
Lake Snell Perry & Associates are polling for the Democrat Bush
bashing group America Coming Together. Their poll numbers appear to be
bogus. At a time when national polls show President Bush gaining ten
or eleven percentage points, their polls show Bush losing ground in
Michigan and Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin, the poll shows its greatest flaws when compared to two
other recent polls. The LA Times poll just a week ago gave Bush 45
percent to Kerry’s 46 percent. A Republican poll of just a few days
ago showed Bush at 48 percent and Kerry at 46 percent. Now, after the
largest bounce from the Republican convention Lake Snell Perry
Associates show Bush at 44 percent to Kerry at 50 percent.

The following is the story behind this documentary:
When John Kerry appeared before the U. S. Senate Foreign Relations
Committee in the spring of 1971, his testimony sent shock waves
throughout America and the world. Here was a young, articulate
Ivy-Leaguer, a highly decorated Naval officer who had seen combat in
Vietnam. Now, driven by conscience and lofty ideals, Lt. Kerry said he
felt compelled to break his silence and tell the unvarnished truth
about the Vietnam War and those who fought it. The war, he said, was a
criminal endeavor driven by a “policy of atrocities.” The 2.5 million
men who served in Vietnam were akin to “Genghis Khan’s barbaric
hordes,” thugs and psychopathic war criminals who wantonly plundered
the Vietnam countryside, murdering, raping and bombing hundreds of
thousands of innocent civilians – old men, women and children -- each
and every day.
Lt. Kerry’s widely televised statements were dramatic and persuasive,
made all the more credible by the fact he had been there, said he had
witnessed many of these same atrocities. His testimony catapulted him
to international prominence and the ranks of leadership in the
American anti-war movement, launching his once failing political
career. It also permanently branded in the American psyche the image
of Vietnam veterans as murderous “baby killers” and “drugged out
losers,” a perception that persists today, one deeply embedded in our
history.
That single act earned for Kerry the lasting enmity of Vietnam
veterans, especially those who had borne the brunt of his accusations,
that small percentage of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who
actually served on the frontlines. Many of these combat veterans would
carry the scars of their service for life. Kerry’s repudiation of
their sacrifice represented yet another war wound, one that would
never heal. As compelling as Kerry’s Senate testimony was, these men
knew it was lacking in one key element … truth. They knew from their
own combat experiences virtually all his allegations were lies; the
U.S. military would never countenance such brutality. And, they also
knew his actions were a deliberate betrayal of all of them, especially
the more than 58,000 who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
But, perhaps, more than any living group of combat veterans, it was
the America ’s POWs who suffered most, forced to endure the immediate
consequences of Kerry’s treacherous falsehoods. In 1971, some 700 of
these men were reported as captured or missing in action, most
presumed held prisoner by the North Vietnamese Communists in such
places as the notorious Hanoi Hilton. Already subjected to years of
torture, solitary confinement and unspeakable psychological and
physical abuse, their lives were literally hanging by a thread when
Kerry issued his damning testimony. In mere moments, Kerry had
willingly given the Vietnamese Communists what they had spent years of
torture and blood-letting to drag out of their American hostages, an
unqualified “confession” they were all war criminals. |
