Democrat’s exploitation
Sen. Charles Schumer, Democrat Chairman of the Senatorial Campaign
Committee, tried to use the suffering of Katrina victims to raise campaign
funds.
Schumer asked people to sign a petition to fire the Federal Emergency
Management Director at the
Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee’s website. Once there those
clicking to sign the petition were asked to make a campaign contribution.
Schumer chairs the campaign committee.
The Associated Press is reporting that the DSCC would give all the money
collected to the Red Cross and if you visit the website there now is a link
to the Red Cross on their website.
Iowa update
Laura Bush
First Lady Laura Bush came to Iowa with Secretary of Education Margaret
Spellings. Mrs. Bush announced that the Department of Education has a place
on their website to list school supplies that school districts or charitable
organizations wish to donate. She also offered support for the No Child Left
Behind Act.
Tom Vilsack
Word comes back that Gov. Tom Vilsack, who would be president, delivered his
speech to the Labor Day crowd in New Hampshire by way of someone holding the
phone up to the microphone. While some believe this wasn’t an auspicious
beginning, Des Moines Register political poohba, David Yepsen, pointed out
that Vilsack received more coverage than if he were there in person. After
all, who knows Tom Vilsack at this point in time.
Vilsack delayed his trip to New Hampshire in order to prepare for Katrina
flood victims coming to the state. So far, 20 evacuees have arrived in
Yankee land.
Katrina’s effect
Des Moines Register Thomas Beaumont tried to offer insight into the effects
of Katrina on what caucus activists are thinking about who their party needs
to nominate. The quote from a former Gov. Terry Branstad aide, David
Roederer, doesn’t bode well for the Washington, D.C. crowd:
"For me personally, I think this reinforces that you want to have somebody
with administrative experience," said Roederer, onetime chief of staff to
former Gov. Terry Branstad. "At this point, I would favor a candidate that
is not in the U.S. Senate or Congress."
